The Opera della Metropolitana's extensive photo collection is made up of two distinct archives. The first, put together in the course of more than a century, contains about 7,000 pictures of works owned by the Opera. The second, left to the Opera della Metropolitana by the famous art historian Enzo Carli at his death in 1999, contains some 11,000 photographs, most of which refer to art works from various ages located all over the world. A grant from the Region of Tuscany in 2003 made it possible to initiate a project of cataloguing the entire photo collection in digital form for consultation by the public. The estimated date for completion of the catalogue and opening to the public is the end of 2005.
