Piccolomini Library

Its location inside the Cathedral of Siena and the wealth of its decorative apparatus, make the Piccolomini Library an exceptional monument in many respects. On June 29, 1502 in Rome, a contract was stipulated between the patron cardinal Francesco Tedeschini Piccolomini, nephew of humanist pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini) and Umbrian painter Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio who was entrusted with decorating the library. Built along the left side of the cathedral, where the rooms of the old rectory once stood, this room was intended to contain the pope's patrimony of books, along with the codices that belonged to Tedeschini and his brother Giacomo.
