The Cathedral

Heart of the art, history and tradition of Siena, the Duomo of Siena whose impressive mass rises in the homonymous piazza, constitutes one of the most illustrious examples of Romanesque-Gothic cathedral in Italy. According to tradition, the current cathedral took the place of an early church dedicated to Mary, erected around the XI century on the site of an earlier temple dedicated to Minerva. Further news unaccompanied by precise documents inform that the building was consecrated in 1179 in the presence of pope Alessandro III Bandinelli from Siena, following the peace treaty signed with Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa.
